SWAN Rating Scale

Strengths & Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behavior

About This Scale

The SWAN (Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behavior) rating scale was developed by Dr. James Swanson and colleagues. Unlike most ADHD rating scales, it measures behavior across the full spectrum — from challenges to strengths.

Parents rate their child on 18 behaviors using a 7-point scale from –3 (Far below average) to +3 (Far above average). Average is 0.

Why the SWAN is different: Most ADHD scales only measure problems. The SWAN recognizes that ADHD behaviors exist on a continuum — many children with ADHD have real strengths in attention when highly motivated, creativity, and energy. A strength profile alongside a challenge profile gives a more complete picture of your child.

Important: This rating scale is for informational purposes. Results should be discussed with a qualified clinician. A low score on one or both subscales does not confirm an ADHD diagnosis, and a score in the typical range does not rule out ADHD. Diagnosis requires a comprehensive evaluation.
