Meet the clinician

Dr. Douglas Cowan, Psy.D., MFT

Forty years of helping over a million parents and teachers understand the brain behind the behavior.

Dr. Douglas Cowan
Licensed MFT since 1988
Who he is

A clinician, a coach, and the author of the ADHD Information Library.

Dr. Douglas Cowan is the author and clinical director of the ADHD Information Library at NewIdeas.net, founded in 1997. Over one million parents and teachers have visited through the years. He is a licensed therapist in California, Arizona, Oregon, and Washington, and provides counseling and ADHD coaching online.

He is not opposed to the proper use of medication — but he has spent his career documenting the great value of alternative and complementary approaches: nutrition, neurofeedback, CES technology, movement, and the skills built through good counseling. Skills are always going to be more important than pills.

The Winnie the Pooh framework — the six types of ADHD that organize this site — is his original clinical contribution, developed by reading the Hundred Acre Wood stories to his own children and recognizing each character in the families he worked with.
