Insulin also regulates the metabolism of lipids and proteins, the synthesis of nucleic acids and the expression of certain genes. Diabetes, Type I is an Insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM), now known to be a T-cell mediated autoimmune disease specifically targeting the pancreatic beta cells, a deficiency strongly correlated to a hereditary predisposition to injury or destruction of pancreatic ß-cells which produce and secrete Insulin, and the lack of the respective tissue regenerative power of those cells.
