Four Year Old and School ADHD

Hi my daughter who is four and soon to be five in november, her teachers at school are saying she has classic signs of hdhd. I always have known shes been QUITE active. Is that to early to determine this. If not whats the best way to treat this without drugs at such a young age..

Thanks - a concerned mother

Hi Mom

There are a lot of 4 year olds who look like they are ADHD now, but by the time they are
8 yrs old they will be fine. Children mature at different rates. By eight you typically
know what you are going to be dealing with in terms of ADHD, or LD, or dyslexia, etc.

If ADHD is seen as a neurological immaturity, then its easy to see that there are some
four year olds who will look "neurologically immature."

You daughter is simply really young. She may not be ready for school yet. So the first
intervention that I'd recommend is that you take her out of school and do Kindergarten
again next year when she's likely to be more mature and ready to handle it. If she's still not ready for school then, you'll probably need to get her assessed.

I'd also encourage you to consider our eating recommendations:

There are certain combinations of foods that make kids more "hyper" that need to be
avoided, and other foods that help with concentration and we need to eat them more.

Let me know what you think
